Frequently Asked Questions about Childbirth Classes

What will I learn at a Childbirth Class?

Every class is different, but most offer instruction on labour progress, comfort and relaxation measures, breastfeeding, and newborn care.  Seek out a class that will address the subjects you are most interested in, such as choosing a caregiver and place of birth, developing a birth plan, epidurals and other medications, postpartum support, and natural childbirth.

Who should take a Childbirth Class?

Absolutely every first time parent and most experienced parents.  For the small investment of time and money you could be saving yourself fear, pain, discomfort, or even injury.

Should I take a class alone or with my labour coach?

It is best to take a class with whoever will be your primary support person during labour, be that your husband, partner, mother, or friend.  This is not always possible, however, so don’t avoid the class just because you have to go alone.  Particularly if you have no one to support you during labour, it is very important that you are as prepared as possible.

What is the difference between Childbirth Education, Childbirth Preparation, and Prenatal Education Classes?

These and others, are many ways of saying the same thing.  Some educators offer special Prenatal Education designed for early pregnancy.  Childbirth Education classes are intended to be taken sometime in the last trimester.  If you’re uncertain what a class will cover, ask the educator directly, rather than making assumptions about what the class includes.

Why should I pay for Childbirth Classes when my hospital offers them for free?

Because the information provided in the classes offered by your hospital will be influenced by hospital policies and current obstetrical practices.  Independent childbirth educators have nothing to either gain or lose by offering you all of the relevant information.  Like all things, you get what you pay for.

Where can I find a good Childbirth Class?

The Giving Birth now offers both private and group lessons.  If our class schedule does not meet your needs, you can visit our Links page for a list of some organizations that certify Childbirth Educators. Search the organizations’ websites for an educator in your area.
