Frequently Asked Questions about Labour Doulas

What’s the difference between a labour doula and a midwife?

Everything except philosophy.  A midwife delivers babies.  A labour doula does not.  A labour doula offers no medical services.  Even if you have hired a doula, you still need to find a caregiver for your labour and birth. However, even midwives are generally not available for continuous support throughout labour.  A doula attends a woman at home, travels with her to the hospital, and rarely leaves her side.  A doula can afford to spend every drop of her energy supporting a labouring woman, while a midwife must be rested and ’fresh’ for the moment of birth.  Doulas and midwives make an excellent team.

What is a labour doula?

A labour doula is like a professional labour coach.  She offers continuous physical and emotional support.  Many doulas also offer informational support and prenatal preparation, and will act as your advocate in the hospital setting.  Read an outline of what my Labour Doula Services include.

Does working with a labour doula really make a difference?

Absolutely!  Doulas have been shown to significantly reduce medical interventions and to increase women’s satisfaction with their birthing experience. Read more

Why would I hire a doula when I have my husband to support me?

Doulas and Dads make an excellent team.  Your baby’s father loves you in a way your doula can not, and your doula has more knowledge and experience than your husband does.  Read more about how doulas and dads work together.

Can I still work with a doula if I plan on having an epidural?

Definitely.  Epidurals might ease the physical pain of labour, but giving birth is about so much more than pain.  Your doula is there to support you emotionally, and to provide for those physical needs that are not pain related. Read more about The Giving Birth Philosophy.

What happens if I need a cesarean section?

Then your doula will help you to prepare emotionally and to understand everything that is happening and why.  She knows what your birth plans are and she will help you to stay in charge of your birthing experience no matter what the circumstances.

How much does a doula cost?

Doulas charge anywhere from $200 to $1500, depending on what their services include and where they are working.  At The Giving Birth, I believe in the goal of providing a doula for every woman who wants one, so I try to keep my costs for Labour Doula Services low.
