Amanda on becoming a Midwife

Within days of the birth of my first son, I began to consider a career as a midwife.  Midwifery college is going to be a four year, full-time commitment.  My husband and I have been discussing the logistics of making it work since the idea first occurred to me almost seven years ago.  We are waiting until our children are a little older because I don’t want to miss these tender years with them.  I don’t want to miss any years with them, really, but I know that I want to be a midwife.

I know because of the thrill I get working with labouring women as a doula.

To give and not to count the cost.”

I know because I would rather talk to women about their birth experiences than pretty much anything else.

I know because of how angry I feel every time I hear about a labour room injustice.

But most of all, I know because I can imagine leaving my family on Christmas day to attend a birth — and feeling good about it.  My goal as a mother is to raise children who will be proud of me each and every time a baby is born in my care.
